LAHORE – As an integral part of Eid celebration for the Pakistanis, Kashmiri “churiyan” are picking up the pace to become one of the biggest Eid trends this season. Kashmiri Churiyan offers the wearer delicate glasswork, vibrant colors, and tiny ghungroos that create a soft ching-ching sound. These bangles add the perfect traditional touch to any shalwar kameez or pastel Eid outfit.

The significance of ‘Churiyan’

It is pertinent to mention here that Churiyan has not been a part of our tradition since the Mughal Times or since the era of the Delhi Sultanate; in fact, they have been passed on through generations, dating back to the time of the earliest civilization discovered, Mohenjo-Daro, a part of the Indus Valley Civilization.

According to the Archaeological evidence, excavations in the region discovered bangles made out of terracotta, shell, copper, bronze, and gold. They have been a part of Indian history through literature as well. Amongst the Vedas, in the Rigveda, the God Maruts was described as a deity wearing bangles on his hand.

The importance of Churiyan in modern-day matters derives from its ability to connect women with their culture. Among women, it is seen as a symbol of elegance, beauty, strong marital status, and fertility.

The different colors of Churiyan represent different attributes; the red symbolizes romance and commitment, the green symbolizes prosperity, the yellow symbolizes happiness, and the gold symbolizes luxury.

The rise in demand

The shops and stalls are flooded with people demanding to buy these masterpieces; however, due to the sudden demand, the shops with limited stocks have finished selling the churiyan waiting for the next stock to come, and the bangles are becoming difficult to find ahead of Eid.

Rates and places to buy Kashmiri Churiyan

The price of Kashmiri Churiyan varies from PKR 400 to 3000, depending on the retailer. You can find them at Liaquatabad Churi Market, Tariq Road, Gulf Shopping Centre, 7 Street Market (Cavalry Ground Lahore), Liberty Market Lahore, and Ichraa Bazar Lahore.
