Lahore – Amid rising tension with Russia on the eastern side, Germany has stepped forward and is leading a major military exercise that aims at quickly moving troops and equipment to Lithuania.
On Thursday, the German military leadership gathered in the port of Rostock with ambassadors from the Baltic states and officers from other nations to observe a ferry carrying military vehicles depart towards Klaipeda, Lithuania. The convoy was escorted by police, a corvette, a minesweeper, and a helicopter.
Moreover, military experts cited the interception of drones in the air and on the water, and Eurofighter jets were seen flying over the port.
The Germans call this exercise ‘Quadriga,’ led by the German navy’s leadership and its various components, with participation from the army and air force. It involves over 8,000 personnel from 14 countries, including NATO allies along the Baltic Sea Coast. The exercise also features troops from the US, UK, France, and Canada.
According to reports, the German military says that 40 ships, 20 aircraft, and well over 1,800 road vehicles are taking part in this exercise.
Gen. Carsten Breuer, who is the chief of staff of the German military (Bundeswehr), stated that “we are seeing firsthand what it truly means when Germany assumes international responsibility” and when it functions as a “reliable supply hub for NATO.”
Germany is looking forward to making its military a strong force in the region after neglecting it for the past few years, it inaugurated a brigade in Lithuania that borders Russia and its close ally Belarus in the face of potential Russian aggression.
Quadriga is scheduled to continue for several weeks, and some of its activities are anticipated to overlap in timing—though not in location—with a joint military exercise conducted by Russia and Belarus later this month. This exercise, known as Zapad (which means “West”), is expected to involve over 13,000 troops.
