Karachi's IoBM becomes Pakistan’s first cycling-friendly campus

KARACHI – The Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Karachi celebrated World Cycle Day by becoming Pakistan’s first cycling-friendly campus.

This feat comes at a time when IoBM is celebrating its Silver Jubilee. IoBM’s Mr Talib Karim, President; Ms Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director and Dr Syed Irfan Hyder, Rector graciously supported and encouraged this initiative. Mr Salman Beg, Alumni of the first Batch; Mr Farhan Ahmed, President Alumni Association and Mr Kamran Bilgrami, Head of Corporate Trainings EMEC, IoBM played a key role in turning this idea into a reality. Furthermore, Tufail Chemicals Group sponsored over 100 bicycles to add value to this environment-friendly initiative.

The management of IoBM envisions that once the lockdown is over, the faculty, management, staff, students, and alumni while following SOPs, will indulge in a healthy and a nostalgic activity by commuting on cycles across the sprawling campus. It will decrease the carbon footprint of the campus and help IoBM pursue its vision of promoting an environmentally friendly campus. Earlier in November 2019, IoBM’s Alumni Association established the IoBM Cycling Club that held a number of cycling events for the IoBM family.

Commenting on IoBM achieving the status of a cycling-friendly campus, Dr Asima Faisal, Associate Professor and HoD, Health and Hospital Management Program, IoBM, said, “Cycling is truly a sustainable and healthier travel option for us and our future generations. The paybacks of cycling are too many, including aiding the environment by decreasing carbon emissions and noise thus making IoBM an ecofriendly campus. In addition to saving money, optimizing space and relieving the pressure of car parking, regular cycling helps in reducing pollution and in improving physical and mental health. Being a professional bicycle rider myself, I have plans to ride while visiting different buildings within the campus once the lockdown ends while following SOPs. This will encourage other female faculty members who are hesitant and not motivated to ride a bicycle.”
