ISLAMABAD – Months of speculation surrounding Sadie Sink’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day role have finally come to an end, with the latest Marvel film confirming that the Stranger Things actress plays Jean Grey, one of the most recognisable characters in the X-Men universe.
Marvel Studios had remained silent about Sink’s character throughout the film’s promotional campaign, despite widespread fan theories suggesting she would portray the powerful mutant. Those rumours gained momentum after the first trailer released in March briefly showed a mysterious red-haired figure wearing a green jacket, leading many comic book fans to believe the character was Jean Grey.
The mystery continued until the film’s theatrical release on July 31, when audiences finally saw Sink’s role revealed on screen.
Marvel kept the role secret to avoid spoilers
Director Destin Daniel Cretton previously explained that the secrecy surrounding Sink’s character was intentional and aimed at protecting the audience’s viewing experience.
Speaking before the film’s release, Cretton said revealing certain characters beforehand would have reduced the impact of key moments in the movie. He added that viewers attending opening weekend would enjoy a better experience without knowing every surprise in advance.
Marvel’s strategy reflected its recent approach of withholding major plot details to preserve audience reactions.
Sadie Sink previously expressed excitement
Although she avoided discussing specific details of her character during promotional interviews, Sink previously said she was eager to eventually speak about her role.
The actress described Spider-Man as her favourite superhero and praised Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker. She also noted that joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt similar to becoming part of Stranger Things, a franchise she admired before joining its cast.
Sink also reunited with director Destin Daniel Cretton, whom she first worked with when she was 14 years old, calling the collaboration a “full-circle moment.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the world no longer remembers Peter Parker’s identity.
