Lahore – Pakistan’s petrol relief scheme has been revised to remove the requirement to buy at least five litres of petrol in a single transaction, allowing eligible beneficiaries to use their Rs500 weekly relief token even when purchasing a smaller quantity.
The change was approved after the government reviewed public feedback during the first 48 hours of the nationwide rollout. The Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme provides Rs100 per litre in relief to eligible two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
Five-Litre Minimum Purchase Requirement Removed
Under the original system, motorcycle and three-wheeler users received a five-litre token worth Rs500, with the subsidy calculated at Rs100 per litre.
The government has now removed the minimum five-litre purchase requirement.
Beneficiaries can therefore purchase less than five litres and still use their weekly Rs500 token. The full value of the token is to be passed on to the consumer, and petrol stations cannot deduct a service or processing charge.
The change is intended to make the scheme more accessible to people who cannot afford to purchase five litres at once.
Motorcycle And Three-Wheeler Eligibility Expanded
The government has also extended the eligibility age for motorcycles and three-wheelers from 15 years to 20 years.
This means vehicles registered from 2006 onwards can now qualify under the scheme, according to the latest government update. The earlier rules covered two- and three-wheelers registered from 2011 onwards.
The relief remains limited to eligible non-commercial users and one vehicle per user or owner.
Rs500 Weekly Relief For Two And Three-Wheelers
Under the revised arrangement, eligible motorcycles, rickshaws and other qualifying two- and three-wheelers can receive Rs500 in weekly fuel relief.
The monthly entitlement remains equivalent to 20 litres of petrol at a Rs100-per-litre subsidy.
The five-litre figure therefore represents the value of the weekly token rather than a minimum quantity that beneficiaries must purchase in one transaction.
800cc Cars Continue Under Existing Rules
There has been no change to the fuel relief arrangement for eligible cars with engines of up to 800cc.
Owners of qualifying cars continue to receive a 10-litre token every 10 days, equivalent to three tokens per month.
The subsidy is Rs100 per litre, giving eligible small-car owners relief of up to Rs1,000 per token and Rs3,000 over three tokens in a month.
How To Register For Petrol Relief
The government is using an SMS-based system to register beneficiaries.
Eligible citizens can register by sending their required vehicle and identification details to 9771. The Ministry of IT says the process is designed to allow citizens to register from home.
Once registered, beneficiaries can send TOK to 9771 before visiting a petrol station to generate their fuel token.
The token message is then presented at the petrol station, where the transaction is verified through the digital system.
Government Removes Charges From Scheme
Authorities have also stressed that beneficiaries should not pay anyone for registration or access to the relief.
The government has urged citizens to protect their CNIC and vehicle information and report any suspected misuse or irregularities.
Petrol stations are also required to provide the approved relief without imposing additional charges on eligible consumers.
Rs75 Billion Approved For Fuel Relief
The Economic Coordination Committee has approved Rs75 billion for the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme.
The government has said the programme is aimed at providing targeted assistance to lower-income segments following the increase in petroleum prices. The Petroleum Ministry has estimated the scheme could cost around Rs25 billion per month.
The scheme is being administered through the Fuel Pass System, with the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications responsible for the digital infrastructure.
Relief Scheme Rolled Out Nationwide
The scheme was initially launched in Islamabad before being expanded across Pakistan.
The government has also ordered alternative arrangements for areas with limited internet connectivity, including parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The latest changes follow feedback from beneficiaries during the initial nationwide rollout.
By removing the five-litre minimum purchase requirement and expanding vehicle eligibility, the government has adjusted the petrol relief scheme to accommodate more users and smaller fuel purchases.
