LAHORE – Ed Sheeran has apologized to fans over the Ed Sheeran Macklemore controversy, addressing the fallout surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his Loop Tour during his Philadelphia concert on Saturday.
Sheeran spoke about the situation at Lincoln Financial Field on September 19, his first concert since the controversy escalated. He acknowledged that he had made mistakes in handling the situation and addressed the wider debate surrounding Gaza and the role of politics at his concerts.
The controversy began earlier this month after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks during his performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
How The Macklemore Controversy Started
Macklemore performed at Sheeran’s New Jersey shows on September 4 and 5.
During one of his appearances, the rapper expressed support for Palestinians and introduced his protest song Hind’s Hall, which addresses Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remaining dates of Sheeran’s tour.
Macklemore later said that several US venues had indicated they would not allow him to perform as part of the tour. Sheeran subsequently said that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour’s promoters and venues rather than by him personally.
Other Artists Leave Sheeran’s Tour
The situation escalated after several other performers announced that they would no longer participate in the tour.
Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe announced their departures, while Irish band Beoga also left the tour. The artists cited solidarity with Macklemore and concerns about artists being able to express views about the conflict.
Their departures left Sheeran performing in Philadelphia without his previous group of supporting acts.
Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza During Concert
Sheeran opened his Philadelphia show by discussing the controversy and apologizing to his audience.
